How to get your business found on AI search
To get your business found on AI search, your website has to be readable by machines, not just by people. That means text that loads without JavaScript, direct answers written in plain language, structured data an engine can parse, and no robots rule blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. Get those four things right and AI assistants can quote you. Get them wrong and you are not in the answer at all, however good your site looks.
More buying decisions now start with a question typed into ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews. The person asking never sees a results page. They see one answer, assembled from a handful of sources the engine could find, read and trust. That is the new shortlist. This is how you get on it.
What "getting found on AI" actually means
Answer engines do not rank pages, they quote them. Traditional search hands you ten blue links and lets you choose. An answer engine reads a small set of sources, writes a single reply and names the ones it used. There is no page two. There is no scrolling past a competitor. Either your business is in the answer or it is invisible.
That changes what a website has to do. For twenty years the job was to rank. Now the job is to be quotable. A page that ranks well can still be useless to an AI if the content only appears after JavaScript runs, if the copy never states a plain fact, or if there is no structured data telling the engine what the business actually is. We cover the full discipline on our AEO service page, but the short version is this: write for the question, structure for the machine.
Why most business websites are invisible to AI right now
We scan a lot of sites. The same four problems come up again and again.
The content is hidden behind JavaScript
Many modern sites render their text in the browser. A person sees a full page. A crawler sees an empty shell. If your headline, your services and your prices only appear after a script runs, the engines have nothing to read and nothing to quote. Server rendering fixes it, and it is the single biggest win on most sites we rebuild.
The copy never answers anything
"We deliver bespoke solutions tailored to your needs" is not an answer. It cannot be lifted into a reply because it says nothing. AI engines look for self-contained sentences that stand on their own: what you do, where you do it, what it costs, how long it takes. If a sentence needs the three paragraphs around it to make sense, it will not get quoted.
There is no structured data
Structured data is a small block of code that tells an engine what a page is about in a format it does not have to guess at. It is built on the schema.org vocabulary, which Google, Bing and the AI engines all read. Without it, a machine has to infer that you are a business, where you are based and what you sell. With it, you are handing over a clean, unambiguous fact sheet.
The AI crawlers are locked out
Some sites block AI bots by accident, usually through a copied robots.txt file or a security setting nobody revisited. Blocking GPTBot means ChatGPT cannot read you. Blocking ClaudeBot means Claude cannot. It is a one line fix that most owners never check, and the rules themselves are a published standard, RFC 9309, not a secret.
The four things every answer engine checks
We group the signals into four pillars. Every fix on this page falls into one of them.
Findable
Can a crawler reach you at all. HTTPS, a valid robots.txt, a working sitemap, canonical URLs and AI bots that are allowed through rather than blocked. If you fail here, nothing else matters.
Quotable
Is there anything worth lifting. Real text in the HTML, a sharp meta description, content that has been updated this year, and question and answer material an engine can drop straight into a reply.
Understandable
Can a machine parse the page. One clear H1, headings in the right order, schema.org JSON-LD and Open Graph tags. This is the difference between an engine knowing what your page is and an engine guessing.
Trustworthy
Does the page show depth. Internal links that connect related pages, outbound citations to credible sources, and the emerging llms.txt standard, a plain text file at your root that tells AI models what your site contains and where the important pages live.
How to check if AI can read your website
The fastest way to find out is to scan it. Our free AEO scanner fetches your page server side, runs 17 checks across those four pillars and scores it out of 100 in about ten seconds.
It reads your page the way a crawler does. That is the point. If your content is hidden behind JavaScript, the scanner sees the same empty page ChatGPT sees, and it tells you so. Every failed check comes with a plain English fix, not a code dump. There is no account, no trial and no paywall.
What your score actually means
A score of 85 or above means your site is in good shape for AI search. 60 to 84 means the foundations are there but engines are missing key signals. Below 60 usually means something structural is hiding your content.
Most business sites land between 40 and 65. That is not a failure of effort, it is a symptom of when they were built. Sites made three years ago were built for browsers and for Google's crawler. They were never built to be quoted by a machine, because nothing was quoting them.
Seven fixes that move the needle fastest
1. Server render your content
Make sure your text exists in the HTML before any script runs. View source and search for one of your own headlines. If it is not there, the engines cannot see it either.
2. Answer the question in the first sentence
For every page and every FAQ, open with a sentence that answers the question completely on its own. Detail comes after. That opening line is the one an AI will lift.
3. Add structured data
Organization or LocalBusiness on your home page, Service on service pages, FAQPage wherever you have questions, Person for the founder. Google's own structured data documentation covers the formats, and the same markup feeds the AI engines.
4. Let the AI crawlers in
Check your robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Googlebot and Bingbot. Point it at your sitemap. This takes two minutes and it is the most common own goal we find.
5. Publish an llms.txt
A short markdown file at your root, describing what your business does and linking your key pages. The llms.txt standard is young, but it is cheap to add and it gives models a clean map of your site.
6. Keep your key pages fresh
Engines favour content that has been touched recently. A dateModified field that has not changed since 2023 is a signal, and not a good one. Review your main service pages twice a year and mean it.
7. Earn citations off your own site
Being mentioned on sites the engines already trust, local press, industry directories, supplier pages, helps a model connect your name to a real entity. This is slower work than the technical fixes, and it compounds.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers
Technical fixes get picked up in days to weeks, once your pages are recrawled. Building the kind of authority that gets you quoted for competitive questions takes months. The honest sequence is: fix what is broken first, because there is no point earning authority for a page a crawler cannot read.
If you want the fixes done rather than explained, that is what our SEO and AEO work is. Scan your site, then send us the score and we will walk you through the report.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business found on AI search?
You get your business found on AI search by making your website machine readable: server rendered text, direct answers, structured data and a robots.txt that allows AI crawlers. Answer engines build replies from pages they can fetch, parse and trust, so the work is technical before it is creative. Start by scanning your site to see which of those signals you are missing, then fix the failures in order: access first, structure second, content depth third.
Why doesn't my business show up in AI results?
Most businesses do not show up in AI results because their website content is invisible to crawlers, usually because it is rendered by JavaScript or because the site has no structured data. Other common causes are AI bots being blocked in robots.txt, pages that have not been updated in years, and copy that never states a plain fact an engine could quote. It is rarely one big problem. It is normally four small ones stacked.
How do I know if ChatGPT can read my website?
You can check whether ChatGPT can read your website by running it through an AEO scanner that fetches the page server side, the same way an AI crawler does. Our free AEO scanner does exactly that, runs 17 checks and returns a score out of 100 in about ten seconds. If the scanner sees an empty page, so does ChatGPT.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, AEO and SEO share the same foundations but optimise for different outcomes: SEO aims to rank a page, AEO aims to get it quoted. Both need fast, crawlable, well structured pages. AEO puts extra weight on self-contained answers, structured data and freshness, because an answer engine is looking for a sentence it can lift rather than a page it can list. In practice we do them together, since almost every AEO fix helps traditional rankings too.
How much does it cost to check my AI visibility?
Checking your AI visibility is free with our AEO scanner: no account, no trial and no paywall on any of the 17 checks. You enter your website address, name and email, and the full report appears on the page. Paid work only starts if you want the fixes implemented rather than listed.
What is a good AEO score?
A good AEO score is 85 or above, which means AI engines can find, read and trust your site. 60 to 84 means the foundations are there but key signals are missing, and below 60 usually points to structural problems hiding your content. Most business sites we scan land between 40 and 65, because they were built for browsers rather than crawlers.
Does AEO work for local businesses in Northern Ireland?
Yes, and local businesses often see faster gains, because there is less competition for local questions than for national ones. When someone asks an AI for a plumber in Coleraine or a wedding venue near the Causeway Coast, the engine still needs a source it can read and verify. Clear location data, consistent contact details and LocalBusiness schema make you that source. We work with businesses across Northern Ireland and the UK from the north coast.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Technical fixes typically start showing up within days to weeks of your pages being recrawled, while authority driven visibility for competitive questions takes months. The fastest wins are unblocking crawlers, server rendering your content and adding structured data. The slowest is earning mentions on other sites the engines already trust.
