Is llms.txt an official web standard?
This is where some of the marketing around llms.txt gets ahead of reality.
It’s a proposal, not a universally adopted web standard.
It doesn’t currently have the same established status as robots.txt, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, or Schema.org structured data. There’s no guarantee that every large language model, search engine, or AI assistant actively looks for the file.
There’s also no universal agreement about how the information should be processed.

The risk of giving AI outdated information
There’s an obvious weakness in the format: it creates another piece of content that needs to be maintained.

The file could then direct artificial intelligence systems towards an outdated page or describe a service that no longer exists.

However, the implementation cost is also low. A carefully written file can be created without redesigning the website or changing the customer experience.
That makes the decision relatively straightforward.
Add it when the website foundations are already strong. Maintain it properly. Test whether it’s being accessed. Watch how support develops across AI platforms.
But don’t sell it—or buy it—as a magic solution.
